Children’s HeartLink is a leading international development organization (established in 1969) dedicated to improving access to high quality cardiac care for children with heart disease in underserved regions. Most recently in 2018, more than 135 000 children were served by Children’s HeartLink’s 19 partner hospitals -- including five self-sustaining Centers of Excellence -- located in Brazil, China, India, Malaysia and Vietnam. In the same year, more than 1800 medical professionals received training to better care for children with heart disease. Children’s HeartLink’s strategic vision includes developing 50 Centers of Excellence and reaching one million children with heart disease by 2030.
Children’s HeartLink has decades of experience in improving access to quality pediatric heart care. In partnership with key stakeholders we strengthen health systems by:
Children’s HeartLink has worked with pediatric cardiac centers in India since 1999. In our 20 years of work, our investment in India, direct and in-kind, has surpassed US $4 million. Our partner sites in India include: Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Kochi, Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Bengaluru, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) and Narayana Superspeciality Hospital- Howrah in Kolkata, and G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNM) in Coimbatore.
Our capacity building work for physicians in the community over the past eighteen years has been integral to our work in India and is strengthened by our collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), National Board of Examinations (NBE), Indian Nursing Council (INC), Pediatric Cardiac Society of India (PCSI) and most recently the State Government of Kerala and the National Health Mission (NHM).
Nurses are integral members of the pediatric cardiac team. Empowering nurses and improving nursing competency not only directly impacts the outcomes for children with congenital heart defects but also improves organizational commitment and reduces turnover. With this in mind, Children's HeartLink has developed nursing education programs like the Nurse Residency Program, to enhance bedside nurses’ skill and expertise in critical care following open heart surgery.
Children’s HeartLink’s association with the nursing conference in the PCSI started in 2014 when CHL facilitated the first nursing track for nurses in pediatric cardiac care at the Asia Pacific Pediatric Cardiac Society meet in Delhi. Since then, every year, the nursing conference has become a part of the PCSI annual meeting offering panel discussions, oral and poster presentations, and skill stations focusing on nurse as an integral member of the pediatric cardiac team. Children’s HeartLink is proud to support the 6th Nursing Conference at the 20th Annual Conference of the PCSI at Atal Nagar in Chhattisgarh.
